Air combat training will increase air activity in Marathon County

F-35

More than 1,000 military personnel will be participating in a major air combat exercise — and authorities say that could mean increased military activity in several counties including Marathon.

Marathon County Sheriff’s Office officials say the Northern Lightning Counterland exercises will be conducted from Aug. 5 to Aug. 16 at the Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center. That will involved 1,100 military personnel from the Air Force, National Guard and Marine Corps.

The training will include some of the most advanced military aircraft including the F-35A and F-35C, and the F-16.

The training will mean increased military flight activity across 22 counties in Wisconsin, including Marathon, Portage and Wood counties in central Wisconsin.
