City goes BANANAS for UMBRELLAS

A colorful set of umbrellas hovering over Third Street in downtown Wausau is causing quite a stir, in a good way.

Three hundred umbrellas were installed last month to celebrate Compass Properties Manager Mark Craig’s 20 years working downtown. The umbrellas were paid for by Craig and have since brought a bevy of attention to the area.

Photos of the colorful canopy have been cropping up all over Facebook, while a number of drones have flown overhead to capture video of the umbrellas. The umbrellas have also captured the attention of media outlets statewide. News stations in La Crosse and Madison broadcast stories in the past week about the umbrellas, which cost roughly $3,400 to buy and install.

Craig, who first came to Wausau in August 1996 to manage Wausau Center mall, says he’s humbled and in awe of the response. “The thing that strikes me is all the smiles they’re bringing to people’s faces,” Craig says.
