DOWNTOWN cams, WIFI proposed

Wausau officials are considering a proposal to install cameras for an “additional level of security and surveillance” at The 400 Block and at the Big Bull Falls Park Gazebo, at the Scott Street bridge.

The $30,000 request submitted by the City-County Information Technology Commission, which serves Wausau and Marathon County, comes at a time when police and city leaders are grappling with problem drinking and other undesirable behavior at the downtown park. If approved, the cameras would be installed and operational by June 2017.

Officials are also considering a plan to provide free wireless internet to 400 Block visitors. Frontier Communications in July submitted a proposal to provide WiFi at The 400 Block at a cost of $12,000 per year, along with a wrap on a Metro Ride bus for advertising. Members of Wausau’s Economic Development Committee say they’re interested, but they asked city staff to explore other options before committing to the service.
