Fat biking gets first nod toward permanent season at Nine Mile Forest

Fat bike racers ride Nine Mile Forest during a race in 2021. After a trail season, Nine Mile Forest is on its way to permanently allowing fat bike riding in the winter.

Fat biking at Nine Mile Forest Recreation area got its first OK toward being a permanent fixture during the winter sports season.

The County Forest Citizens Advisory Committee Wednesday evening voted 9-1 to recommend that the county keep the fat biking season. The County partnered with the Central Wisconsin Off-Road Cycling Coalition to try a winter fat biking season at Nine Mile in 2022-23. The trails largely followed the existing mountain bike trails.

Comments in the packet material were overwhelmingly supportive of fat biking at Nine Mile Forest. Fat bikers largely followed the summer mountain bike trails, which are separate from the ski trails but cross over them.

The County Forestry Committee will take up the potential season at its June 27 meeting.
