Marathon County tax rates are expected drop again

County taxpayers are expected to see a drop in their tax rates next year.

Marathon County Administrator Lance Leonhard says the tax rate for the county is expected to drop at least 15 cents per $1,000 of valuation. That would be a $30 drop in taxes for the owner of a home valued at $200,000.

That comes as the county’s budget this year is expected to be “status quo,” Leonhard explains. There aren’t many new budgetary requests but also not really any funding cut requests.

The Wausau School District also expects to see lower tax rates.

How that will impact actual taxpayers remains to be seen, however. Wausau re-valuated its properties this year, so residents whose home values increased a lot might still see a higher tax bill despite the rates dropping.
