The No. 1 ranked Newman Catholic boys basketball team made short work of its opponents en route to a state championship in the Division 5 WIAA state tournament Saturday.

The Cardinals came into the state tournament with the top seeding, and rolled through No. 4 ranked Royall 52-42 before defeating No. 3 ranked McDonell Catholic 66-54 to earn the state title.

The Cardinals lost only four games all season and never had a close game the entire tournament. Their semi-final win over Royall was the closest in the tourney with a 10-point margin.

The tournament win marks the first time a Wausau-based team won the state title since 1960 when Wausau earned the title; that was before there were separate east and west high schools.
