A petition circulating in response to a new plan to restructure Wausau area schools is starting to gain momentum.
The petition, started by district parent Norah Brown, asks the district to pause the restructuring plan that would separate Wausau West and Wausau East into one high school and one junior high, respectively, and reduce the number of elementary schools down to eight.
The petition then asks that the district hold an advisory referendum on whether or not the district should move forward with the plan.
City Council Member Lisa Rasmussen in an op-ed in City Pages last week also called on the district to hold a referendum. Rasmussen said many in her district are concerned about the restructuring and some have asked if the city can in some way stop it.
The petition had just under 450 signatures at the time of this posting. It started circulating online Thursday. Find the Wausau School District restructuring plan petition here.
