Find Romance at the Opera, take a candlelight hike, or dance for a good cause! Here are seven things to do around Wausau on this lovely week:
Saturday, Feb. 14 | Sentry Theater, Stevens Point
Sometimes you just can’t beat the classics. Shake things up this year and partake in an elegant, old-world Valentine’s Day date night with operatic favorites from Mozart, Puccini, Verdi and more. Love is in the air as the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra is joined by vocalists Natalie Cummings and Austin Bradley – two lovebirds that met while singing opera! This concert will also feature the winner of the annual Jenkins Family Young Artist Concerto Competition. Starts at 7:30 p.m. $40 adults, $35 seniors, $15 child/student. cwso.org
Saturday, Feb. 14 | Rib Mountain State Park, Wausau
Feeling a little too cooped up to spend a night indoors this Valentine’s Day? Come out to Rib Mountain State Park for a hike and enjoy hot chocolate, hot cider, special goodies and marshmallows. It’s always a fun time at the Friends Gathering Space, where the hike starts. There’s lots of room, a cozy fireplace inside, a charming campfire outside, heated restrooms and smiling faces. Some snowshoes are available to borrow but it’s recommended to bring your own. Starts at 6 p.m. No cost to participate, but donations to cover event costs are welcome. A State Park annual or daily admission sticker is required (stay warm, you can order them online from the DNR!). If the weather is questionable, check the Friends of Rib Mountain Facebook page or call 715-680-9480. ribmountain.org
Sunday, Feb. 15 | Rothschild Pavilion, Rothschild
Dance, sing and listen to music from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s all in the name of a good cause: benefiting the University of Wisconsin Initiative to End Alzheimer’s. Every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease. It’s the only disease among the nation’s top 10 leading causes of death that has no treatment, prevention, or cure. Use your boogie shoes, or toe-tapping conversation, to raise money to help scientists better understand this disease. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. Wheelchairs, walkers and lawn chairs are welcome. Starts at 1 p.m. No cover charge. Donations requested. 715-432-8125
Saturday, Feb. 14 | Homestead on 52, Wausau
Take your sweetheart to listen to the rock stylings of Mood Medication, a Milwaukee-based trio, at Homestead on 52 in Wausau. Their set starts at 7 p.m.
Feb. 12-15 | Wausau West High School, Wausau
Monday, Feb. 16 | Marathon County Public Library, Wausau
Who says video games can’t be social? Game out like it’s the 1980s or 1990s by chilling with friends, or making new friends, while playing Nintendo together! Teens are welcome to come play “Hollow Knight,” an action-adventure game for the Nintendo Switch at the library. The only catch: when participants get a “Game Over,” it’s time to hand over the controller to a new player. This is a free event. The console and game is provided by the library. Starts at 1 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 17 | The Grand Theater, Wausau
Emmy-Award winning actor Richard Thomas brings to life the comedic genius of Mark Twain in the legendary one-man show, “Mark Twain Tonight!.” This show bursts with Twain’s uproariously funny and “pungently wise humor.” Recently seen in Netflix’s “Ozark,” Richard Thomas is the first and only actor authorized to perform the play since Hal Holbrook’s original. Starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $64-$124. grandtheater.org
