Andy and Cathy Adrian say their new Adventure Awaits building is suited to CrossFit success

About five years into their business, Cathy and Andy Adrian were considering what to do next. They started Adventure Awaits CrossFit in 2019, buying it from an existing business. It was located in the former LIFT location near The Pool People.

Lucky for them, one of their members was interested in getting into commercial real estate and asked about building them a building.

Perfect.

The new building that houses Adventure Awaits CrossFit opened in April as the ultimate in what they want in a CrossFit space. Their builder let them design it to their specifications, adding in all the things they would want in a building for the sport.

“So we designed it the way we wanted it based on our travels around the country visiting many CrossFit gyms and realizing what works best,” Adrian told City Pages.

CrossFit is a sport nearly everyone can do, Adrian says. Cathy says the idea behind CrossFit is that they’re functional movements done at high intensity. But, they say, that intensity can be either dialed up if it’s not challenging enough or dialed down for someone new or who needs it. Cathi says they have members as young as eight years old and as old as 80.

“Everyone who walks in the door is considered equal,” Cathy says, “no matter what level you’re at, what gender, your age, it doesn’t matter.”

The new gym has a kids space that makes it easier for parents to get their workout in since the kids have a place to play. Also, the past gym didn’t have overhead doors for heading outside for, say, a run or some outdoor exercise that’s on the menu that day. Most gyms do because it makes outdoor access easier. And since most CrossFit gyms don’t have air conditioning, the doors help with temperature control too.

There are places outside to sit after a workout and sand in which to do other types of activity. And more space inside allows them to have the rig where people do pull-ups and ring activities moved away from the wall, allowing better movement.

Speaking of space, they added a second-story mezzanine for lockers so people can keep their gym bags off the floor.

The space is bigger, but not actually by much - 5,000 square feet of floor space vs 4,500. But, Adrian says, it seems like a lot more because of the increased efficiency. The total space of the building is 7,000 square feet.

Something new that anyone could try is the cafe next door. Weston House Cafe opened alongside the gym and serves as a great place for athletes post-workout, or just the general public to come try some healthy food.

The cafe serves healthy food such as wraps, smoothies and smoothie bowls, and salads. And some more decadent plates such as bacon, egg and cheddar biscuits.

If you’ve never tried CrossFit, Cathy and Andy say to give it a try - they believe the benefit of CrossFit is that it can be modified to help anyone get in shape.
