Aspirus Wausau Hospital leadership announced this week a $227 million, multi-phase expansion.

The expansion will see increased capacity with 48 intermediate care beds and a 16-bed observation unit, according to a press release from Aspirus. It will also set up a future intensive care unit expansion.

The expansion also includes advanced diagnostics with a new CT/PET scanner, specialized care units and expanded surgical facilities.

“This expansion positions Aspirus Wausau Hospital as the destination for specialized health care in Northcentral Wisconsin,” Matt Heywood, Aspirus President and CEO, said in a press release. “It is a direct response to the growing needs of our patients and communities. By increasing capacity and access to advanced technology, we are ensuring timely care and creating efficiencies that benefit everyone.”

Work on the expansion is slated to begin early this year and is meant to help provide care to a population that is increasingly aging, and to address the more complex care situations that have been arising.
