Portraits with a pop

Posted

A creative new take on live event entertainment has entered the Wausau area.

Brushstrokes & Bubbly is a business that does live watercolor guest portrait paintings at weddings and other events.

Taylor Spatz is the founder and artist of Brushstrokes & Bubbly.

She was born in Wausau and grew up in Marathon City. As a child, she was always engaged in some form of arts and crafts, and she loved taking art classes throughout her school years.

“In high school, I took every single art class that you could think of,” said Taylor Spatz.

After having kids, Spatz decided she needed a new hobby, so she started painting pet portraits. Then, while searching for new inspiration, she stumbled upon wedding portrait paintings.

“I’ve seen some ideas of painting weddings, and I was like, ‘Oh, I could do that,’” she said.

Spatz is a self-taught artist and a self-starter in the business world. While being an artist can be an independent process, Spatz said that bringing other people joy is the best part of her job.

“Making people happy is my biggest priority,” she said. “Seeing people’s faces, smiles and giving a unique gift. That is my favorite part.”

Still not sure what Brushstokes & Bubbly is? Spatz explains it best:

“Brushstrokes & Bubbly is a live watercolor painting for events. Things like weddings, graduation parties and corporate events. I started it with the idea to make something fun for the guests when they come. I wanted party favors to be fun, and not something you’re going to throw in the garbage right after. So, I came up with this minimalist idea where I would capture the guests’ skin tone, hair color, outfits and styles.”

Not long after starting the company, business took off, with 20 weddings booked in the first year. Now a new addition is being added, which puts the ‘bubbly’ in Brushstrokes & Bubbly.

“We will be serving champagne out of vintage glassware,” said Spatz. “So you’ll get a glass of champagne while having your painting done. At the end of the night, you go home with a unique painting.”

The Brushstrokes & Bubbly Bar will have a sold-out, grand opening on Sunday, August 17, from 1–5 p.m. The event will take place at Chack’s Day Break Bar & Grill, 5307 Westfair St,, Schofield. A $25 ticket includes a live watercolor portrait, a 10ml signature perfume made individually at a fragrance lab, a glass of chilled bubbly and full access to shop at and explore all of the available vendors.
Spatz said that the Wausau area has been very supportive of her business and that she is excited for the new addition to see how people will react.

“I pour my heart and soul into all of it. I love what I do,” she said. “I think it’s a very fun thing to incorporate everyone and have people walk away with unique artwork.”
