Bull Falls finds new life

The rebirth of Bull Falls Brewing Company

Posted

When the former Bull Falls Brewery shut its doors after a long saga of financial woes, it was a surprise to many. Established in 2007, the brewery was popular throughout the area for its German-style brews and unique events.

Now, in the hands of new owners, the site is being reopened under the name Bull Falls Brewing Company, starting with its Biergarten this weekend.

Kurt Mueller and Jason Peck are the owners of Bull Falls Brewing Company. Since buying the building from the county, the team has renovated the brewery inside and out.

“It’s much more open,” said Mueller, describing what visitors can expect from the brewery once renovations have been completed. “It’s gonna be outside seating. We totally gutted the whole inside of this place, so it’s gonna be a completely different feel.

“In our minds, we’re not a bar. We don’t want to be a bar. There’s not gonna be any casino games, there’s not gonna be any neon signs on the wall.”

Per patron request, of course: “We will have a kitchen” Mueller continued. “That’s a big thing that a lot of people asked for over the years: food.”

While the inside of the brewery is still being renovated, Peck and Mueller are excited to show off the brewery’s updated Biergarten.

“We have completely updated the Biergarten,” said Mueller. “That is going to be totally, totally different from what it was before.”

Changes he noted included the pavilion, trees and garage area. Mueller and Peck plan to make the whole Biergarten available to rent for weddings, corporate events and other large gatherings.

“Jason and I both knew it’s pretty important to Wausau to have this place open and running,” said Mueller. “It’s just a place that needed to be open.”

If there’s one thing that patrons will find familiar, however, it’s the beer.

“We have the same brewer,” Mueller emphasized. While the brews’ names must be changed for legal reasons, Peck and Mueller haven’t changed his brewing process.

And distributing familiar brews to the people who love them is one of the things Mueller is most excited about. They’ve even begun distributing locally, complete with a distribution van.

“It’s hard to explain the amount of people that we’ve met all over the state that love the beer, and love being here, and can’t wait to get back here,” Mueller explained. “I guess it’s just bringing all the orphans home — they kinda refer to themselves as the orphans [of Bull Falls Brewery].”

Bull Falls Brewing Company’s Biergarten opens to the public this Saturday, July 26, at 3 p.m. As ever, the brewery is located at 905 E Thomas St. in Wausau. For more information, visit Bull Falls Brewing Co.’s Facebook page.
