Comedy, belly dancing, a boys choir and more this weekend

Posted

Dena Blizzard

Saturday 11/23 | Grand Theater, Wausau

The nice thing about writing about comedians these days is that they all have their material on YouTube. For Dena Blizzard, I found her video on YouTube called “Chardonnay Go” where she shows off a mom app that, much like Pokemon Go, lets you find glasses of wine around the environment. It’s hilarious, and is a lot like what you can expect from her comedy show as it makes its way to The Grand. Blizzard runs One Funny Mother, which is a media company dedicated to women comics. This show, called I Love You, Get Away From Me, features three generations of women comics and promises to be a side-splitting night of entertainment. 7:30 pm. $30-$62. grandtheater.org.

Magic Hunks

Saturday 11/23 | Q&Z Expo Center, Wausau

For those new to Wisconsin, there is this tradition called Deer Hunter Widows Weekend. It goes something like this: since the men are usually out hunting for deer, sitting in tree stands or drinking and telling hunting tales around the fireplace, the women need something to do, so enter the male strip show or something like it. Women hunt now too, but nevermind that. The promo for the show literally encourages women to misbehave. I guess you got to! This is kind of like Chippendale’s, or Magic Mike’s, or… well you get the idea. 8 pm. $20, $25 at the door. www.qzexpocenter.com

Vienna Boys Choir

Wednesday 11/27 | Campanile Center for the Arts, Minocqua

This vocal group is the stuff of legends - the Vienna Boys Choir has been performing for audiences around the world for more than six decades now. This particular performance, Christmas in Vienna, features a selection of Austrian folk songs, classical masterpieces and many of your Christmas favorites. 7 pm. See website for ticket details. campanilecenter.org

Festival of Trees Opening Gala

Tuesday 11/26 | Central Wisconsin Convention and Expo Center

Some of you are obsessed with Christmas (hey, I see you, playing Jingle Bells and watching Charlie Brown Christmas before Thanksgiving). And if that’s you, the Festival of Trees is like your Super Bowl. The official festival of trees doesn’t kick off until Nov. 27, but one day early is the opening gala, and it should be quite the event! Stroll through the dizzying array of delightfully decorated trees, enjoy some refreshments, including of the adult variety, and make merry. You can still get home in time to watch Charlie Brown Christmas. 6 pm. $85. www.aspirus.org/festival-of-trees

Wild Trillium

Saturday 11/23 | Whitewater Music Hall, Wausau

A belly dancing troupe sounds like something a bigger city would have, but hey, we’ve got one right here in Wausau! Wild Trillium has been around for awhile now, and their dances are always a delight. The costumes are lovely, they sometimes incorporate swords into their performances, and it’s just a ton of fun. They’ve performed in a variety of places, but one of the best is Whitewater Music Hall, where you can enjoy one of their brewed-on-site beers — something a number of Wausonians are still unaware of. The orange backdrop of Whitewater’s tap room really fits the belly dancing theme well. 6 pm. $5. whitewatermusichall.com
