Wangard Partners will have until the end of 2025 to review a site in Wausau’s RiverLife development area.
The city’s Economic Development Committee OKed the planning option.
Wangard responded to a request for interest from the city’s community development department, proposing to build a two-building, 135-unit apartment project in the city’s flagship development area in its southern portion.
The RiverLife area has suffered from numerous setbacks since it opened for development in 2015. So far only one development project has been completed, in addition to WOW Family Entertainment Center and the parks project.
Wangard representatives say they plan to start construction next fall, but the planning option gives them more time in case setbacks come up.
Interim Community Development Director Randy Fifrick told committee members that the city working with Stantech has done a lot of environmental cleanup on the site though issues could still arise as Wangard does its due diligence.
