The Cop Shoppe Pub hosted its 10th annual corn roast on Saturday, July 26.
At the event, free corn was served in an effort to raise money for the Humane Society of Marathon County. Mayor Doug Diny and Chief of Police Matthew Barnes were in attendance while participating in the fundraising event involving a dunk tank.
“Events like the corn roast help us be visible in our community and give us an opportunity to be on-location with adoptable pets,” said Lisa Leitermann, Marathon County Humane Society executive director. “In fact, the dog we sent to the event is being adopted by someone who met him there.”
The fundraising effort comes after the Humane Society of Marathon County recently shared that the number of animals arriving at the shelter is growing to an overwhelming amount. More animals arrive each day to an already full shelter.
“We’re in the thick of it right now; every summer is challenging but high volume intake paired with slower than normal adoption rates is creating a difficult situation to manage,” said Leitermann.
Leitermann said that there are many ways the community can help out, including spaying and neutering pets, sharing posts of lost pets and adoptable pets, donating items to the Marathon County Humane Society wish list, sponsoring a pet adoption fee or donating toward the Second Chance Fund to help animals in the area with medical needs.
