Snowmobiles trails in Marathon County opened for the first time this season over the weekend, according to a press release from the county’s parks department.
Wausau/Marathon County Parks Department officials say trails were open as of 8 am Friday except for corridor 20 in Zone 2, which is closed between intersections 257 and 258. As of Monday, there was also a trail closure at intersection 354 in Zone 4.
The news was likely welcomed by snowmobilers who last year didn’t have much snow to ride on. The lack of snow especially wrought havoc on the Northwoods, which relies heavily on tourism from snowmobilers.
Trails in Marathon County are listed as fair on Travel Wisconsin’s snowmobile conditions report. Most areas in the northwoods are listed as at least fair on the map. Marathon County's listing was updated Saturday evening.
