This April marks the 25th anniversary of the national Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign. Since its inception, SAAM has sought to unite survivors, advocates and communities in a shared commitment to end sexual abuse, assault and harassment.
Throughout April, The Women’s Community will host a series of events in the Wausau area to provide support for survivors and raise awareness in the community. April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is recognized in the events.
The events are as follows:
Teal Tuesdays: Show your support for survivors and help create awareness about sexual assault by wearing teal on Tuesdays this month.
Karaoke for Consent: Friday, April 10, 7-10 p.m. Sing your heart out, support survivors, learn how to be an active bystander and help build a community where
Dani’s Journey Bowling Event: Saturday, April 11, 6 p.m. at Dale’s Weston Lanes. Registration begins at 5 p.m., live music from 8 p.m. to midnight. Proceeds will go to The Women’s Community to help educate youth on teen dating violence and sexual assault.
Award Ceremony: Thursday, April 16, 5-7 p.m. Recognize outstanding community members for their dedication in supporting survivors of sexual assault. The event is located at The Wausau Club located in the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art.
We Step into the Light art exhibit: Thursday, April 23, 5-7 p.m., formal presentation at 5:45 p.m. Enjoy artwork created by volunteer artists who collaborated together through We Step into the Light, a project raising awareness about sexual assault, relationship and gender-based violence and stalking. Enjoy art, music and appetizers at the UW Center for Civic Engagement.
WearBlue4Kids Day: Thursday, April 23. Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, stable and nurturing environment. Show your support by strengthening prevention efforts in our community by wearing blue.
Tattoo & Piercing Flash Event: Saturday, April 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Make a statement with new ink or a piercing and leave with fresh style and a positive mark on the community. You must pre-register. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Women’s Community. This event is at Dani Girl Tattoo in Schofield.
Book Discussion: Monday, April 27, 6-7:30 p.m. Discuss “The Tell: A Memoir” by Amy Griffin. An intimate, sharply observed story about learning
to understand the quiet signals — both internal and external — that shape a life. Hosted by The Story Cellar in Wausau.
Dollars for Denim: Wednesday, April 29. Denim Day is an international protest responding to the Italian Supreme Court’s overruling of a rape conviction in 1999. Although the assailant had been found guilty at trial, the Supreme Court argued that because jeans are difficult to remove, the assailant could not have done so without the victim’s help. Everyone is invited to wear denim clothes and help raise funds and awareness. Donations in any amount can be made at womenscommunity.org/event/denimday.
