Goats get to work at Wausau's Barker-Stewart Island

Posted

Wausau is once again using goats to reduce the amount of invasive plants. The goats are seen as a more environmentally friendly approach than using herbicides. The goats placed on the island have been part of the city’s summer efforts for the past five years.

Since 2021, goats from Liberation Farms in Almond have called Barker-Stewart Island home for a two-week stretch to spend their time eating nuisance plants. The use of goats helps the city avoid chemical herbicides, offering a sustainable alternative for maintaining the area’s greenery.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the goats have become a seasonal attraction. People will spend their day at the park to see the goats doing their job of munching on weeds.

After wrapping up their work this summer, the goats are expected to return again in the fall. This marks the second year the city has welcomed them for two separate visits.

For the safety of the goats and the public, an electric fence surrounds the goats during their stay. While visitors are welcome to observe them, it’s important to keep a distance.
