A segment of the Great Pinery Heritage Waterway has received national recognition after being named a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This honor places Marathon County among a select group of destinations with two national trails, joining the renowned Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
The newly designated 20.8-mile segment of the Great Pinery Heritage Waterway spans from Riverside Park in Merrill to Riverlife Park in Wausau.
“With the Great Pinery now nationally designated, Marathon County can proudly say were are home to not one, but two National Trails,” said Tim White, executive director of Visit Wausau. “This is more than a win for outdoor lovers – it’s a boost to our economy, identity and quality of life. It cements Wausau as Wisconsin’s basecamp for adventure.”
The Great Pinery Heritage Waterway is a navigable water trail located in North Central Wisconsin. Situated on the Wisconsin river, the trail spans several counties and is 108 miles long.
The Great Pinery Heritage Waterway winds through scenic forests, urban landscapes and historic sites, inviting paddlers to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Great Pinery. The Great Pinery Heritage Waterway is a pleasant paddle for recreational and pro paddlers alike.
