The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has announced that a sharp-tailed grouse hunt will be held this fall.
This is the first sharp-tailed grouse hunt since 2018. The season will run from October 18 to November 9.
An application period will run from June 20 until August 1 for entry into a limited-drawing lottery. Preference points from prior years will be honored.
The reason for the limited number of hunting seasons is due to a decline in the sharp-tailed grouse population numbers which was first noticed in the 1990s. The decline was most likely due to fragmentation and a loss of their core habitat.
The advisory committee waited until the population increased before recommending a hunt. Restoration efforts in the northwest portion of Wisconsin have helped to grow the population.
“I hope to see the population numbers continue to climb,” said Bob Hanson, DNR wildlife biologist. “As we continue creating new barrens habitat and connecting habitat segments within a fragmented landscape, we should continue to see the population increase.”
