DNR proposes incidental taking of endangered fish in Marathon County

Posted

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has proposed issuing a permit for the incidental taking of a rare fish. The incidental taking could result from the Rothschild Dam–Timber Crib Spillway Reconstruction Project in Marathon County.

Incidental take refers to the unintentional loss of individual endangered or threatened animals or plants that does not put the species' overall population at risk.

Paper company Domtar is proposing to remove and replace the timber section of the Rothschild-based hydroelectric facility due to its deteriorating condition. This project also involves the installation of temporary upstream and downstream cofferdams in the Wisconsin River around the dam to complete the project.

The project is anticipated to begin construction in the summer of 2025 and be mostly complete by January 2029, with the final restoration completed in the summer of 2029.

The fish that is being considered for this project is the state endangered black redhorse. The black redhorse fish has been confirmed in the area of the project site. Although DNR staff determined that the proposed project may result in the incidental taking of some fish, they concluded that the proposed project is not likely to significantly impact the recovery of the species.
