Pretty Woman: The Musical
Thurs.Fri. 2/13-14 | Grand Theater, Wausau
Someone at the Grand Theater must be on an 80s kick - and that’s cool, I love Stranger Things too. Within a week of each other you could watch Dirty Dancing while a live band plays the songs and now you can watch Pretty Woman: The Musical. Brought to life by Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, this fantastic production will knock your socks off while evoking memories of the 80s. (OK, technically it came out in 1990 but decade culture tends to bleed over a little.) 7 pm. $75-$135. grandtheater.org
Les Misérables School Edition
Fri-Sun 2/14-16 & Thurs-Sun 2/20-23 | Center for Civic Engagement, Wausau
This probably sounds like a broken record at this point, but it always needs saying - don’t overlook these shows because they are children’s theater. The Central Wisconsin Children’s Theater puts on some truly top-notch shows, and this one is no exception. Based on the Victor Hugo novel, this story of false imprisonment in 19th century France is the longest-running musical of all time, and it has one of the most-recognized and celebrated musical scores. mycwct.org (Photo by Kara LaFrombois for City Pages)

Local H
Friday 2/14 | Q&Z Expo Center, Ringle
Back in the 1990s, I and a friend got tickets to go see Stone Temple Pilots. Opening for them was a band neither of us had ever heard of, but after the show we quickly became fans. Local H had a hard-driving style and became one of the top under-the-radar bands of the alternative 90s. The anthem “High-Fivin’ MF” has lyrics I probably can’t print in these hallowed pages, but the title probably gives you an idea. Local H was founded in 1990 in Zion, Illinois, by guitarist Scott Lucas, who has been the band’s only continuous member. And, it’s easy to forget, the band was only two members, with the guitarist running his guitar through a guitar and a bass amp to achieve a fuller sound. Impressive since it came before the age of live looping. 7 pm. $25 advanced, $30 at the door. qzexpocenter.com
Ailey II
Sunday 2/16 | Grand Theater, Wausau
Since I generally have two left feet, I’m always impressed by dance troupes. The amount of coordination and body control, the athleticism of dancers has always been impressive to me. This act, Ailey II, is no exception with statuesque dancers who perform incredible moves. I am definitely not in the loop in this field because I hadn’t heard of Ailey II but the group has been around since 1974, bringing together some of the top dancers and choreographers in the world. 7 pm. $35-$65. grandtheater.org
Cool Hat
Friday 2/14 | The Mill Yard, Wausau
Friday nights are for throwing on a few tunes, and getting a good chill vibe going. Wausau band Cool Hat can help channel that vibe for you. The band plays a variety of covers and also sprinkles in their own originals, with a blend of rock and funk that is upbeat and fun. The band will be playing at The Mill Yard on Wausau’s west side of town, which is hosting a fun little Valentine’s Day gathering. 9 pm. The Mill Yard on Facebook.
Dark Valentine’s Day Party
Friday 2/14 | Nevermore on Third, Wausau
If you’re into the gothic aesthetic, and your idea of Valentine’s Day involves skulls and Edgar Allen Poe’s poetry, Nevermore has you covered. The gothic-themed bar is hosting a Dark Valentine’s Day Party, which will featured the music of DJ Lucius Lovewatts, comedy and crowdwork from the comedians Jimi C and Lewis Bee, and a unique twist: If you’re in a couple, you’re to wear red and black, and if you’re single, you should wear white. Now I definitely want to hear an update on how that idea pans out. 7 pm. Nevermore on Third on Facebook.
