Wausau Habitat for Humanity launches annual holiday lights recycling drive

Posted

Habitat for Humanity of Wausau announced the launch of its annual Holiday Lights Recycling Program, offering community members a simple way to promote both environmental sustainability and local affordable housing efforts.

The program is currently underway and will run through Jan. 15. Residents are encouraged to donate old, broken, tangled, or working strands of holiday lights. The organization accepts lights in any condition, preventing them from ending up in local landfills. This year’s goal for the initiative is to collect 5,000 pounds of lights.

All materials collected directly support Habitat Wausau’s mission in the greater Wausau area, funding its Home Ownership Program, Critical Home Repairs, and the Veterans Build program, all designed to assist low-income families and veterans in achieving stable housing.

For convenience, collection boxes have been placed at designated locations throughout the community. Additionally, the Wausau Habitat ReStore accepts holiday lights year-round during its regular store and donation hours: Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The lights recycling program has a strong track record of both community engagement and environmental impact. Since its inception in 2014, Habitat for Humanity of Wausau has kept over 46k pounds of lights out of local waste facilities.

Since 1990, the organization has built 76 homes in the community, providing a path to homeownership while also offering critical repair services. The Wausau Habitat ReStore is the primary financial supporter of the homeownership program, ensuring that community donations and purchases directly fuel local housing efforts.
