August 1 was World Lung Cancer Day, and Aspirus Health would like to remind the public that scheduling a low dose CT scan can help spot lung cancer years before symptoms appear.
“A low dose CT scan is quick, painless and powerful,” said Christopher Peterson, MD, board-certified oncologist at Aspirus Cancer Care. “It can find very small cancers on the lungs that otherwise wouldn’t have been detectable. When we’re able to identify cancers earlier, we’re more often able to cure those cancers.”
According to Aspirus Health, if a person checks all of these boxes, a screening would be recommended: current smokers or those who quit within the last 15 years, anyone ages 50 to 77, anyone who smoked a pack a day for 20 years or more and anyone who has no lung cancer symptoms.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, yet only about one in 10 eligible people get screened.
