Marathon County Sheriff's Department investigating shootings

Posted

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office is leading an investigation into two deaths and an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday at a residence in New Hope, a town located in Portage County.

Portage County deputies arrived on the scene late Sunday evening after receiving a request for a welfare check at the residence. There, they found the body of a man in the front yard.

An armed man exited the house from the back and was shot by a deputy, a 13-year veteran of the Portage County Sheriff’s Office. The man was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital.

Inside the house, the deputies found the body of a woman, as well as two unharmed children, who have been released to a family member.

Preliminary observation of the two victims indicates that both of them died from gunshot wounds.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty following the incident, per agency policy.

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office is leading the death investigations, while the Wood County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Their findings will be submitted to the Portage County District Attorney for review.

Law enforcement emphasized that this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
