Them Coulee Boys
Friday 1/24 | Whitewater Music Hall, Wausau
Midwest touring sensations Them Coulee Boys got their start as camp counselors in Northern Wisconsin. A long session of Avett Brothers and classic country songs in 2011 led to gathering members and the formation of a band that’s a favorite amongst those who love bluegrass. The band is kicking off the year with a session at Whitewater Music Hall, which has a nice large space for people to mingle in and beer crafted right on sight. Perfect for a night of musical fun. 8 pm. $20. 21+ whitewatermusichall.com or on Facebook
Hyprov

Whose Line is it Anyway is that classic improv show turned stage performance - and one of its principal stars was Colin Mochrie. For this show, Mochrie joins hypnotist Asad Mecci for this hilarious and mystifying show. Hyprov did a 70-show stint off-Broadway, has toured more than 100 cities and had a six-month residency in Las Vegas, all while garnering much acclaim. See what critics are calling “catnip for those who relish spontaneity and informality.” 7:30 pm. $30-$68. grandtheater.org
Steely Dane
Saturday 1/25 | Campanile Center for the Arts, Minocqua
There are a lot of sayings around Steely Dan. One: They are your favorite band’s favorite band. Two: Many jazz musicians are wannabe rock stars, but Steely Dan’s members were rock stars who dreamed of being jazz musicians. (Paraphrased from a documentary on the group.) But either way, Steely Dan is one of the seminal groups of the 70s, unique in how they blended jazz with post-60s rock for a sound that’s unique and complex. They were also known for bringing top-notch musicians from the rock and jazz worlds (such as bringing Wayne Shorter on to record for Asia, or the session guitarist Larry Carlton for iconic guitar solos). Steely Dane recreates the magic that is Steely Dan, and some critics say better than anyone else has. 7 pm. See website for ticket information. campanilecenter.org
