The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is kicking off a new pilot program around dual enrollment next fall, UWSP officials say.

The new program is planned to start in the fall semester and there will be another in the spring, offering Introduction to Sociology and Introduction to Astronomy, says Miranda Gentry-Siegel, interim director of campus operations at UWSP.

The school has had a dual enrollment program in which high school students could take college classes for some time. But this specific program is focused on students who have the capacity to take college classes but face barriers to doing so.

The courses will be online and asynchronous, as one barrier they heard from schools is that it’s tough to fit a college class with a high school schedule because they don’t line up, Gentry-Siegel says.

The program is working with D.C. Everest, Marshfield, Pittsville, SPASH and Edgar high schools and will work with 35 students this fall and 35 students in spring 2026. That could be expanded to Wausau schools if the program is successful.

There will be no cost to students, Gentry-Siegel says.
