Dig Deep
Saturday 4/8 | Intermission, Wausau
This Stevens Point string band usually gets plunked into the bluegrass genre, but their sound is more diverse than that with a well-honed and hard-edged sound. If you’re into thumping banjo, you’re sure to appreciate these four guys, who perform original, bluesy-rockin’ folk tunes as well as covers. The vocals are rough, rock-influenced and raspy, in front of plucky banjo and other strings. There’s no percussion, making the vocals all the more appreciated. These guys are energetic and dynamic performers which has earned them the love of fans as they tour throughout the Midwest and around the country. 9 pm. Details at 715-849-9377.
Bias and the Language of AI
Tuesday 4/11 | Portage County Library, Stevens Point
This free lecture presented by James Berry and Vera Klekovkina discusses how automatic speech recognition and automatic translation still have significant race and gender biases for humans, thus posing a question of how future service robots will understand all humans and how they will speak back to us. Will they automatically use a higher register language because of their subordinate positions as human servers? By examining how robots speak in current media representations, the speakers will reflect on how AI linguistic coding and processing can impact the evolution of natural languages as well as language acquisition and translation by humans. Starts at 6:30 pm. Details at uwsp.edu.
