Concert on the Square: Johnny and the MoTones

Wednesday, July 19 | The 400 Block, Wausau

Johnny and the MoTones

Some Concerts on the Square feature acts you’ve never seen before – and some are so classic they’re back every single year. Johnny and MoTones is in the latter category – bringing local legends to the stage including Mitch Viegut of the once nationally famous Airkraft in the 80s, and John Altenburgh who is a powerhouse in the jazz scene, the group never fails to delight audiences gathered on the 400 Block.  6-8 pm. No smoking, no pets, no tents or large tables and no blankets down before 4 pm each day as it kills the grass on the 400 Block per Wausau Events. Rain location: Whitewater Music Hall. wausauevents.org.

Booze and Botany

Thursday, July 20 | Whitewater Music Hall, Wausau

Other than the alliteration, it might not seem like booze and botany would be two things that particularly go together. But this event does just that, combining love of plants with mixed drinks from some of the finest mixologists the area has to offer. The event is put on by the Monk Botanical Gardens, which offers a fine botanical experience on the north end of Wausau. Helps support the gardens and enjoy food and drinks from the likes of Red Eye Brewing Co., Ropa’s, Great Northern Distillery, Siren Shrubs, and so much more. Check out monkgardens.org for more details and to purchase tickets. $50, $5 discount for members. 5:30 pm.

Prehistoric Facts with Dino Chris

Thursday, July 13 | Marathon County Public Library, Wausau

I can tell you one fact that isn’t prehistoric: kids love dinosaurs. Get even the most hyperactive kid and hand them a program about dinosaurs and they’re transfixed. So that makes this event — Prehistoric Facts with Dino Chris — a great event to bring the kiddos too. Dino Chris was one of the main helpers at Colossal Fossils when it was located in the now demolished Wausau Center mall. Dino Chris has a few events planned at the Marathon County Public Library around the dino age. Since it’s shark week, Dino Chris will be sharing everything he knows about prehistoric sharks. (Yet another subject kids get excited about, combining two favorites!) 1 pm. Mcpl.us.

The Zach Finnegan Group | Jazz on the River

Sunday, July 16 | Kickbusch Plaza, Wausau

Zach Finnegan

It’s a pretty big deal to have the Jazz on the River series back again – and an even bigger deal to have Zachary Finnegan coming down to the venue. Finnegan is considered a hot new trumpeter based in Chicago takin the scene by storm. Finnegan is currently on tour with Grammy winner Michael Buble, and has shared the stage with musicians Buddy Rich Big Band, Christy Bennett, Jared Thompson, Camila Mennitte, Blueshift Big Band, Meghan Stagl, Carrington Clinton and more. And, Finnegan is originally from Weston! Plus, Pizza Kiln will be on hand with wood-fired pizza available for purchase. Free. 5 pm. Rivervalleyjazz.org.

Jeffrey Martin and Anna Tivel

Thursday, July 13 | Lamplight Sessions, Mosinee

Jeffrey Martin and Anna Tivel

Lamplight Sessions just hasn’t missed with its music yet. Every act that comes in is so carefully curated to delight you that you pretty much could go to any show and be delighted. Jeffrey Martin and Anna Tivel is no exception. Martin’s dark, deep voice paired with Tivel’s mournful fiddle playing make for a somber, soulful sound. With the intimate backdrop of Lamplight Session’s cozy setting, it should make for an enjoyable evening. 7 pm. $36. lamplightsessions.com
