7 things to do around Wausau this week

The energy of a fresh new year can be felt all around  central Wisconsin this coming week, with events and attractions abound. Here are a few happenings worth checking out:

Tea Blending Workshop
Saturday 1/10 | Marathon County Public Library, Wausau

Adults and young adults are invited to join the library on a chilly winter morning for a cozy tea blending workshop! Participants will create their own unique tea blend by combining ingredients such as tea leaves, fruit, flowers, herbs and spices. Follow a provided recipes or mix and match your own combination to develop a brand-new flavor profile! All supplies will be provided, including ingredients, tea bags, hot water and cups for tasting different blends. In connection with the Winter Reading Program, attendees have the chance to receive a special giveaway at the end of the event just for attending! Registration required online. Starts at 10 am. Saturday 1/10 | The Emerald Club, Wausau

Wisconsin based singer/guitarist Mattea Joy takes your favorite hits to new acoustic heights. Her set kicks off at 8 p.m.

Candlelight Snowshoe Hike
Saturday 1/10 | Rib Mountain State Park, Wausau

The Friends of Rib Mountain State Park invite the public to explore Rib Mountain State Park on snowshoes! There will be hot chocolate, hot cider, and special goodies, as well as marshmallows to roast around the campfire. Start your hike at the Friends Gathering Space, just past the Park office. Some snowshoes are available to borrow but it’s recommended to bring your own if possible. Flashlights and headlamps are suggested. Donations to cover costs are welcome. A park annual or daily admission sticker is required. For more information or if the weather is questionable, check the Friends of Rib Mountain Facebook Page Starts at 6 pm. Sleigh Rides for Small Groups
Sunday 1/11 | Willow Springs Garden, Maine

Come out and enjoy an enchanting, crisp winter ride through the snow-blanketed countryside with family or friends! Starts at 9 am. Sleighs go out every half-hour with a ride to the woods for a campfire and a hot drink. Total ride and woods time is about 90 minutes. These rides are intended for groups of 8 or less. $15 per person for ride, $26 per person for ride and soup buffet, $15/buffet only, free for ages 5 and under. 715-675-1171 or willowspringsgardens.com

Fairy Tale Ball
Saturday 1/10 | UW-Stevens Point Dreyfus Center, Stevens Point

Meet your most beloved fairy tale characters — get their autographs, take pictures with your favorites, and join them all on the dance floor. This amazing occasion will allow you to actually meet the characters you read about or see in movies! These special visitors will be coming from lands far, far away, under the sea, and whole new worlds. Hero’s and heroines, some just waking up, and a few are taking their pumpkin carriage! Take in this magical event with your family and friends. There will be a craft corner where you can make your own memento of the Ball, and a dessert table where you can satisfy your sweet tooth. There is no dress code for the Fairy Tale Ball, but children are encouraged to dress in costume of their favorite character, or in their Sunday best. Adults are asked not dress in costume, but are welcome dress in their Sunday best. All proceeds directly support performing arts programming for area youth. Afternoon Ball 4pm, Evening Ball 6pm. ‘Kinky Boots’ at The Grand Theater

The boots are back! This Tony Award winning musical will lift your spirits to high-heeled heights! Based on true events, “Kinky Boots” follows the journey of two people with nothing in common — or so they think. 'Calendar Girls' by River & Woods Theatre Company
Thursday-Saturday 1/15-17 | Wausau East High School, Wausau

“Calendar Girls” is based on the true 1999 story of a group of middle-aged women who decide to raise money for the Leukemia Society in honor of one woman’s late husband. They make an “alternative” calendar showing the beauty of women of every age and become even closer as a community as a result. “Calendar Girls,” set in present-day Yorkshire, presents a heartwarming, poignant story that explores friendship, grief, aging and community spirit through their humorous and daring venture.
