New trail would connect Wausau and Merrill

A new trail proposed by a non-profit group would allow bicyclists to travel from Merrill to Wausau and vice versa. And its planning now has funding.

The non-profit group River District Development Foundation of Merrill is funding the roughly $92,000 to develop the master plan for the trail. That trail, according to county records, would make use of a Wisconsin Public Service corridor that has been designated for a trolley line for most of the path between Merrill and Wausau. That trolley never came to fruition and the idea had been abandoned, according to county materials.

The segment is part of a bigger master plan that would ultimately see a trail traveling from Illinois all the way to Superior.

Under the timeline in the county’s request for proposals, the plan would ultimately be adopted in October.

The county’s Parks Committee on Tuesday will vote on accepting the grant in order for work to start on the master plan.
